Sri Lanka is an island, surrounded by the Indian ocean. It is an Asian country.

Government type :- republic. The current constitution was adopted in 1978.

Administrative divisions:-8 provinces, they are Central, North central, North eastern, North western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Uva, Western.

Chief  of state:-President Mahinda Rajapakse (since 19 November 2005).

The president is considered both the chief of state and head of government. The president who is elected directly by the people for a six year term. (maxium two years)

Cabinet:- Cabinet appointed by the president in consultation with prime minister.

Legislative branch:-Unicameral parliament. Parliament consist of 225 representatives. The members of parliament are elected for 6 years terms at periodical general election through a system of proportional representation.

Capital city:- Colombo

note:- Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte is the legislative capital.

Independence day:- 4 February 1948.(from UK)

Judicial branch:- Supreme court, court of Appeals, judges for both courts are appointed by the president.
